Según su estudio, la corteza frontal media es el lugar donde se sitúa y comienza a desarrollarse esta enfermedad mental.
Los expertos del Centro Benito Menni de Sant Boi de Llobregat compararon el cerebro de 32 personas sanas con el de 32 enfermos.
Utilizaron tres técnicas de resonancia distintas.
Expertos en salud mental del Centro Benito Menni de Sant Boi de Llobregat han identificado la corteza frontal media como la zona del cerebro donde se localiza la esquizofrenia. Según el estudio que ha publicado la revista Molecular Psychiatry, el trabajo de investigación ha sido realizado por la Unidad de Psicosis e Investigación del Benito Menni, que forma parte del Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Salud Mental (CIBERSAM).

El resultado es que las tres técnicas han identificado la misma región cerebral -la corteza frontal media- como anormal en los pacientes.
El doctor Peter McKenna, investigador principal del CIBER de Salud Mental y uno de los autores del estudio, ha señalado que "estos resultados son potencialmente importantes porque la convergencia de estos hallazgos cerebrales, estructurales y funcionales sugiere que la corteza frontal media puede ser un lugar indicado para concentrar los esfuerzos de investigación en el futuro y encontrar las causas de la esquizofrenia".
Los responsables de la investigación han asegurado que éste es precisamente el siguiente paso que tienen que dar, y ya han comenzando a planificar un estudio neuropatológico que confían que en un futuro revele nuevos datos en este sentido.
